Computing Flows Around Microorganisms: Slender-Body Theory and Beyond
We present the mathematical framework that governs the interaction of a forcegenerating microorganism with a surrounding viscous fluid. We review slender-body theories that have been used to study flagellar motility, along with the method of regularized Stokeslets. We investigate the role of a dinoflagellate transverse flagellum as well as the flow structures near a choanoflagellate.
متن کاملA simple implementation of the immersed interface methods for Stokes flows with singular forces
In this paper, we introduce a simple version of the immersed interface method (IIM) for Stokes flows with singular forces along an interface. The numerical method is based on applying the Taylor’s expansions along the normal direction and incorporating the solution and its normal derivative jumps into the finite difference approximations. The fluid variables are solved in a staggered grid, and ...
متن کاملModeling slender bodies with the method of regularized Stokeslets
The motion and flow generated by immersed structures in a fluid in the Stokes regime can be modeled with a variety of different numerical methods. The mathematical structure of the Stokes equations allows one to describe the flow around a three-dimensional object using only information regarding its geometry. This leads to computational techniques such as boundary integral methods or the method...
متن کاملExperimental verification of an Oseen flow slender body theory
Consider uniform flow past four slender bodies with elliptical cross-section of constant ellipticity along the length of 0, 0.125, 0.25 and 0.375, respectively, for each body. Here, ellipticity is defined as the ratio of the semiminor axis of the ellipse to the semimajor axis. The bodies have a pointed nose which gradually increases in cross-section with a radius of curvature 419mm to a mid-sec...
متن کاملAsymptotic expansion for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with non-potential body forces
We study the long-time behavior of spatially periodic solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the three-dimensional space. The body force is assumed to possess an asymptotic expansion or, resp., finite asymptotic approximation, in either Sobolev or Gevrey spaces, as time tends to infinity, in terms of polynomial and decaying exponential functions of time. We establish an asymptotic expansio...
